Kailua-Kona artist Jeffrey Hill will exhibit an array of papier mache tropical fish starting today at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

The exhibit, “Tropical Fish of the Pacific,” runs through Aug. 9. Hill we be sharing about 30 fish, mostly from Hawaii, but a few special ones we have seen elsewhere in the Pacific. Roughly 20 of them will be adult fish. He will also showcase a keiki collection of juvenile reef fish that are distinct from the adults in coloration and shape.

“My wife and I live here in Kona and watch fish like some people watch birds: keeping lists, taking pictures and always hoping for a new fish or other marine animal. In fact, we have a couple Big Island records for fish and a state record for a a little crab,” said Hill, a retired anesthesiologist who resides with his wife in Kona.

Before papier mache fish, Hill painted birds. Two and a half years ago he began making the fish as Christmas ornaments. A year ago, he started creating more realistic fish.
