KOHALA — The O-bon season has again arrived, and the Kohala Jodo Mission in Kapaau will be celebrating this Festival of Lanterns — the definition of O-bon — on July 9. Those who attend and wish to honor deceased family and friends can write messages of remembrance, gratitude and prayer on lantern banners. Rev. Wajira Wansa will help those who need assistance.
Volunteers have worked tirelessly to make the banners decorated with silhouettes of Japanese lanterns signifying continued spiritual enlightenment and symbolically light the way home for deceased loved ones. A number of banners will be offered free on a first come, first served basis, and more elaborate banners can be purchased.
Kohala National Guard alums will be present for a special tribute to honor deceased military personnel during the event.
Rev. Wansa will open O-bon with a service at 5:30 p.m. Food and a craft booth sponsored by the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Kohala taiko group will sell happi coats and fabric bags. Dancing will be from 7–9:30 p.m.
Although O-bon is a Buddhist celebration, the Mission welcomes all people who wish to honor their deceased loved ones to participate in this lantern ceremony.
