DUI infractions on Hawaii Island this year continue to outpace those recorded in 2015.

From June 27 to Sunday, police arrested 13 drivers for operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of those 13 motorists were involved in traffic crashes. None were under 21 years of age.

The Puna District saw the most DUI action last week, accounting for six DUI arrests, while the Kona District reported four.

Police have issued 551 DUI arrests just over halfway through 2016, up from 503 during the same time period last year. Despite that increase, there have been only 748 major car crashes this year as compared to 768 during the same time period in 2015.

The Kona District has reported the heaviest incidence of DUI arrests island wide in 2016, accounting for 218 issued DUI infractions. The Puna District is second on the list with 149 DUI arrests, followed by the South Hilo District with 127.

The North Kohala District has seen the fewest number of DUI arrests, accounting for only two as of Sunday.

The number of fatal crashes on the island are slightly down, although the death toll on the roads is slightly higher. There were 10 fatal crashes by this point in 2015, claiming a total of 13 lives. Thus far in 2016, there have been 11 fatal crashes resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals.

Hawaii Island police say that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue across all districts.
