HONOLULU (AP) — Inmates and staff at Oahu Community Correctional Center are sweating out a power outage that has left them without air conditioning.

The state Department of Public Safety says they’ve been without air conditioning since a power outage Friday. Back-up generators are powering the jail, but air conditioning isn’t connected to the generator system.

The department says the state’s most crowded correctional facility is secure despite the uncomfortable temperatures.

To help alleviate the heat, guards are allowing inmates to have longer recreational time outside. Officials are looking for alternatives such as fans and portable AC units.

Department spokeswoman Toni Schwartz says there are about 1,100 inmates at OCCC.

Electrical contractors are working to locate and fix the power supply problem.
