Nair gradates summa cum laude

Cara Nair of Kailua-Kona graduated summa cum laude from Fort Lewis College on April 30, 2016. Nair received a bachelor’s degree with a major in elementary education and economics.

More than 500 students participated in the spring commencement ceremony.

Face painting at Kealakekua Public Library

Auntie Wendy offers face painting from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Kealakekua Public Library. All ages are invited.

It is also the last day of the 2016 Summer Reading program. Participants should bring their reading logs and collect their prizes.

Sitting and walking meditation meeting planned

Gavin Harrison leads sitting and walking meditation with time for dialogue from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday at 73-4548 Mahi St, Kailua-Kona.

Groups are non-denominational and open to all. Meditation guidance is offered. Attendees should bring a meditation cushion. Chairs are available. Donations are accepted. Gatherings are ongoing, monthly.

Chi kung healing class offered to seniors

Elderly Recreation Services is offering a 10-week chi kung healing class from 9-10 a.m. Mondays July 18 through Sept. 19 at St. Benedict’s Church, also known as the Painted Church.

Sifu Wayne Chenault will show students how to align the body and teach about breath and mind for health. Attendees will work on improving concentration, focus and memory, calming the mind and learning relaxation techniques. This class is open to anyone age 55 and older and will be held at St. Benedict’s Church/Painted Church in Honaunau. Cost for the 10-week program is $10

Degree preparation workshop planned

The University Center, West Hawaii will host a degree preparation workshop from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Koali Building A 101 at the Palamanui campus in North Kona.

The University Center, West Hawaii delivers more than 50 degree and certificate programs from across the 10-campus University of Hawaii system through distance learning technology.

At the workshop, students can learn what degrees are offered in West Hawaii, the necessary steps to move forward, key deadlines, methods of program delivery and what it takes to be a successful distance learning student.
