A driveway and landscaping were added to North Hawaii Hospice in early July as the final additions to a two-year building project.
An annex was added in October 2014 as the first part of the project to accommodate staff who care for nearly 30 or so patients in their homes — triple the number since 2008.
Toby King, then board chair, led the fundraising efforts for the project. Money used to build and expand the facility came from foundations, as well as anonymous large gifts from individuals. Total funds raised were nearly $750,000.
Donations made by local residents regularly are used for resident care operations.
The hospice has provided special care for families in North Hawaii facing life-limiting illness, loss and bereavement since 1986. A 30-year celebration will be held at Pukalani Stables this fall to honor the organization’s founders, board and community members.
