KAILUA-KONA — A Captain Cook man arrested on family abuse charges early Saturday was discovered to have 9.55 grams of meth in his car, police reported.

Noah Nichols Greenwell, 32, was taken into police custody at 3:45 a.m. on Kealakehe Parkway. He was charged with two counts of family abuse and one count each of second-degree assault, third-degree criminal damage, second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug for the meth, and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug for the marijuana.

He was arrested on the abuse charges and police located the drugs within the vehicle, Chris Loos, police department spokeswoman, wrote in an email.

Greenwell allegedly injured a 27-year-old woman earlier that morning and threatened her with further harm, Loos said. The victim suffered injuries to her face, knees, arms and neck, police said.

Court documents state some of the injuries came from “applying pressure on (the victim’s) throat and/or neck,” which interfered with her breathing, blood flow or both. It also says he used a “dangerous instrument” against the victim.

Those documents also allege Greenwell damaged the victim’s vehicle.

Police reportedly recovered 3.8 grams of suspected meth, another 5.75 grams of suspected meth, .45 grams of suspected marijuana and a smoking pipe with crystalline residue from Greenwell’s vehicle.

He was charged in connection with a separate family abuse case on Feb. 10 and bail was set at $1,000. After posting bond in that case, he failed to appear in court and his bond was forfeited.

On Sept. 22, 2014, he was charged with family abuse. He pleaded no contest to a charge of harassment in that case, in which he was fined $230.

Greenwell appeared in Judge Margaret Masunaga’s court on Monday. She maintained his bond at $42,275. Masunaga also set a preliminary hearing for today, but it was delayed because Greenwell did not qualify for a public defender. His preliminary hearing is now 2:30 p.m. July 18.
