Being poster boy for gun control OK

In response to Mr. von Platen Ruder’s letter about a gun range, he actually makes his point in his last statement, educate versus eradicate. If we eradicated guns, then gun education would not be necessary and only police and military would have weapons and our society would be more peaceful.

I praise our governor for being the poster boy for gun control and wish more politicians would not be funded by the NRA for gun profits and could use their judgment and follow the majority of constituents’ desires for control versus the few percent gun lobby money. No one actually reads the Second Amendment, which says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Today’s militia are police and military, not every citizen. All the original meaning of the Constitution crowd somehow conveniently skips the original meaning here, which is very clear.

Shooting range a no-brainer

I don’t own a gun. Never have, and probably never will.

But three years in the 27th Infantry Wolfhounds taught me how to use many of them and it was absolutely necessary training.

With a fair amount of guns on the Big Island, I find it both bewildering and scary to think that their owners have no safe and legal place to learn to safely use them. A public shooting range seems like a no-brainer.

From what I’ve read, it appears that the hotel association is creating the only resistance to this project and they are ignoring both certified sound tests and common sense if they think their guests will be at all impacted by the Puuanahulu shooting range. The fact is that many of their guests — especially Japanese visitors — would use and enjoy the facility.

But big bucks and knee-jerk reactions seem to rule. It’s time for our county and state legislators to step up and support this very worthwhile public facility — with action and not just words.
