VFW plans announced

VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street has several events planned.

A pupu potluck for women veterans is from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at Vet Center above Costco.

Cher’s pulled pork sandwiches will be served with salad and dessert for $5 from 5-7 p.m. Friday. The public is invited.

The monthly Commander’s dinner is planned for July 30. The entree is macadamia nut crusted chicken thighs. Camaraderie is from 4-6 p.m. with dinner served from 6-8. The community is invited.

Rotary Clubs announce upcoming speakers

Darlene E. Martin from the Elama Project at the Palamanui campus, a program that helps students successfully complete their first year of college, will address Rotary Club of Kona Mauka. Laura Mallery-Sayre is a representative of the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation, a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equipment and training to the Hawaii Island Fire Department. Cancer support group meets

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome. Caregivers and supportive family members are also invited.

The group meets to share cancer-related issues and to lend support to one another. Women are encouraged to learn about breast cancer risks and early detection.

Russo-Mingle completes Eagle Scout project

Donovan Russo-Mingle with Troop 26 in Kailua-Kona completed his Eagle Scout project July 9 at Grace Community Church.

Russo-Mingle led his fellow troop members to sand and varnish a play set, as well replace rusted out chains. They also painted downspouts and eaves of the main church building and the building next to it. The project took the troop approximately 6 hours.

Troop 26 Scout Master Dylan Mabuni offered guidance, and HPM in Kailua-Kona who donated paint, varnish and chains.
