Tropical Fruit Growers plan conference
The 26th annual Hawaii International Tropical Fruit Conference is Sept. 30 through Oct. 7, starting at the Kauai Beach Resort and then traveling to Oahu, Molokai, Hilo and Kona for mini-conferences. All attendees registering before Monday receive a discounted fee of $50.
Geared to farmers, educators, orchard managers and proponents of sustainable agriculture, the eight-day event is presented by the statewide Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers and open to the public.
Titled “Achieving Critical Mass,” the conference offers a lineup of visiting researchers and agro experts sharing information and breakout sessions. They include John Yonemoto on “Growing and Harvesting the Best Avocados!” and “Increasing Production,” Diane Ragone on “Ulu,” Robert Paull on “Harvest and Post-Harvest” and Peter Follett on “Market Access: Getting Fruit Approved and Shipped Out of State.”

Officer of the Month luncheon planned
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Justin Gaspar as the Officer of the Month at noon Aug. 3. The guest speaker will be Karen Rose of VASH.
Officer of the Month luncheons are normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. Cost is $20, all inclusive at the Huggo’s restaurant.

Senior ID cards issued
The Coordinated Services of the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division will issue Senior ID cards for those age 60 or older Monday through Friday at the Aging &Disability Resource Center in Hilo.
Cards will also be issued from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Kmart in Kailua-Kona, from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa, 9-11 a.m. Aug. 8 at St. Jude’s Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and 9-11 a.m. at Kohala Coordinated Services of the Elderly. Additional times include from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at Kailua-Kona WalMart, from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 9 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea, and from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B.

Tax workshops planned
The Department of Taxation is offering workshops on the 2016 legislative and administrative rule update, the new administrative appeals process, tax practitioner specialist, taxpayer advocate and an update on tax system modernization.
The workshops will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m., with registration starting at 8 a.m. The fee is $90 for individuals who submit registration and payment by the deadline. Late registrations are $100 per person. Walk-in registrations will be accepted at the door on a space-available basis. Cost includes a continental breakfast, workshop materials and three hours of Hawaii Board of Public Accountancy Continuing Professional Education credit. Workshop materials may be separately purchased for $25 per set.
