Hawaii County Civil Defense said Friday there isn’t a Pacific-wide tsunami alert in effect after an earthquake near the Mariana Islands occurred earlier in the day.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred about 19 miles south-southwest of the island of Agrihan, about 3,800 miles away from Hawaii Island, shortly after 11:15 a.m., Hawaii Standard Time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Ed Teixeira, Civil Defense administrator, said the quake occurred about 120 miles below the Earth’s surface, too deep for a tsunami to result.
“Deep earthquakes generally don’t produce tsunamis,” he said.
