Police arrest 15 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 25 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were younger than age 21.

So far this year, there have been 620 DUI arrests compared with 589 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

During the week, Kona officers arrested seven motorists while Puna and South Hilo officers arrested four in each district.

There have been 826 major accidents so far this year compared with 890 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been 12 fatal crashes on Hawaii Island resulting in 13 fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities during the same period last year.
