Active shooter training on the radio

Hawaii Police Department Lt. Thomas Shopay offers workshops around the island to teach others how to respond in an active shooter situation. He will also discuss the topic at 6:30 a.m. Sunday with Island Issues host Sherry Bracken on KKOA 107.7 FM and at 8 a.m. Sunday on LAVA 105.3 FM. Rotary clubs announce upcoming speakers

The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka will hear from Carol Matayoshi with Going Home Hawaii at its meeting from noon to 1 p.m Tuesday at Teshima’s restaurant. On Wednesday, the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise will host Jasmin Kiernan, director of innovation and transformation at West Hawaii Community Health Center. Mayor offers community talk story

Mayor Billy Kenoi and his cabinet are offering a community talk story at 6 p.m. Tuesday at West Hawaii Civic Center in the Council Chambers.

American Legion meeting planned

The American Legion Kona Post 20 and American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kona Elks Lodge, 74-5596 Pawai Place.

Fellowship and cocktails start at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 4. Dinner will be served after the meeting. Members who want to have dinner should call Post Commander Dave Carlson at 325-6491 for reservations.

Also, The American Legion Post 20 Adopt-A-Highway clean up will be held Aug. 13. Members will meet at 6 a.m. at the entrance of Pualani Estates on Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Psychologist to address brain injury support group

The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, just mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.

Deborah Chavez, who is a psychologist and marriage and family therapist practicing in Kona, will discuss, “The new normal: Adjusting to life after brain trauma.” The talk will address how to increase quality of life after brain injuries and tolerate the multitude of changes that occur during the healing process.

Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public.
