HONOLULU — Hawaii Electric Light is touting a new solar program and hoping it will take off on the Big Island.
They’re doing it at a time when a popular solar incentive program is filling up.
The new program called “self-supply” allows households to supply electricity to their own homes and stay connected to the grid. But it doesn’t allow customers to get reimbursed for exporting energy to the grid.
A popular program that gave customers partial reimbursement for supplying energy to the utility is filling up on the Big Island. It already filled up on Maui.
Solar industry executives say the state should allow more people to participate in the nearly-full program that reimbursed customers for supplying renewable energy.
