20 arrested for DUI

From Aug. 8-14 police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 657 DUI arrests compared with 637 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.1 percent.

A full 75 percent of the arrests were made in South Hilo or Puna. Four were made in Kona and one in Ka’u.

There have been 879 major accidents so far this year compared with 948 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 fatal crashes on the public roads of the Big Island(two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 15 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 14 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 18.2 percent for fatal crashes and an increase of 7.1 percent for fatalities.
