Joseph Tavares Jr.

Joseph “Joey” Tavares, Jr., 64, of Hilo died Aug. 7, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a security supervisor with Aloha Security, and was previously employed by Hilo Rice Mill, the former Hilo Coast Processing, ELCO Cabinets and Sears. He was also a member of the Hawaii Army National Guard and was a former ILWU Union rep.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 18 for a 7 p.m. memorial prayer service. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by daughters, Jolena (Frank Kanae) Tavares of Keaau, Letitia (Edward Sr.) Alameda, Kristen Tavares, both of Hilo; son, Justin Tavares of Hilo; brother, Robert (Marcia) Tavares of Hilo; hanai brother, Rob (Noella) Landgraf of Hilo; sisters, Darlyn (Tim) Conrad of Pahoa, Danette (Elston Seo) Tavares of Honokaa, JoNelle Tavares of Hilo; 11 grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tomoe Miyashiro

Tomoe Miyashiro, 93, of Hilo died July 18, 2016, in Hilo. Born Aug. 8, 1922, in Hilo, she was a retired sales clerk at the former Robins, and had also worked for various clothing stores and was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Hui Okinawa.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Aug. 19 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by sons, Alvin (Charlene) Miyashiro, Edward Miyashiro, both of Hilo, Jay Miyashiro of Honolulu; daughter, Amy (Norman) Kunimura of Honolulu; four grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kevin Asuncion

Kevin Arthur Asuncion, 35, of Pahoa died July 22, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 22, 1980, in Hilo, he worked for the Agro Resources Inc., was a Pop Warner football coach and an NSPYR brand ambassador.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Aug. 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Burial will be at Alae Cemetery (New Section)

He is survived by father, Rodney (Tina Morita) Asuncion of Pahoa; mother, Peggy Asuncion of Pahoa; daughters, Hiilani Asuncion and Tiera Asuncion of Pahoa; stepdaughter, Jazzlyn Cabatbat of Pahoa; son, Dayton Asuncion of Pahoa; brothers, Riley Asuncion, Denton (Ashley Perez) Asuncion, both of Pahoa; stepbrothers, Damien Kawai of Oakland, Calif., Dane Tibayan of Pahoa; sister, Daycia Asuncion of Pahoa; stepsisters, Tatum (Matt) Fielder of Georgia and Jana-Lei (Summer Marcelino) Kawai of Georgia; grandmother, Theresa Wilt of Hilo; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Chizuko Honma

Chizuko “Amy” Honma, 93, of Pepeekeo died July 27, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Nov. 20, 1922, in Ninole, she was a retired seamstress for the former Honokaa Hospital and a member of Paauilo Hongwanji Mission and Paauilo Camp Community Association.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Robert) Kaya of Bellevue, Wash., Lorraine (Warren) Okabayashi of Pepeekeo, Arlene (Michael) Yuen of Mililani, Oahu, Gayle (Benny) Yamamoto of Pukalani, Maui; sisters, Violet Tomoe Oketani of Honokaa, Janet (Paul) Togawa of Mission Viejo, Calif.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
