More on Highway 11 tragedy
The dangerous driving described by Mr. McCoy has several causes and enforcement might help, but it’s difficult to catch a violation that only lasts a few seconds.
Two things that would help: One, If DOT would use statistical methods for speed limits like most other states it would result in smoother flow and safer traffic. Instead, a bureaucrat at a desk in Honolulu makes a decision using a last century textbook method. So speed limits are artificially low.
Two, Hawaii needs a law like other mountain states requiring slow drivers to pull over when possible and let others pass.
These changes would take away the frustration that leads to much unsafe driving. As a member of the Governors Highway Safety Council I have been trying to get these improvements implemented, but the DOT plantation mentality is cast in brass.

Chirping about construction woes
A little bird just came winging into my office to tell me that Isemoto Construction is going to be tearing up and paving the Napoopoo intersection for the next couple of days, or more if the rains come. That means the traffic will be at a standstill from that junction back to Kailua and south to HOVE for hours on end.
Question of the day and counting: Why is this work not being scheduled for nighttime? The little bird said something about night work would disturb the people in that areas “nighty night time.”
I say give those who bitch about “no can sleep” earmuffs and at the same time the county should willingly award an incentive bonus to Isemoto’s men for their “Go For Broke” spirit in getting the job pau. Anyway, dats what the little birdy when tell me. Aloha to all and pleasant dreams for da next couple nights.
