Puu Waawaa hunt rescheduled

All forest reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves and Na Ala Hele hiking trails have reopened. The Puu Waawaa Hunt for Labor Day weekend has been rescheduled for Sept. 24-25.

Free business seminar offered

Alex Mitchell of Pivotal Shift Consulting Group and Stephanie Beeby of InFlow CEO Consulting will present “The Power of Successful Collaborations” from noon to 3 p.m Wednesday in conference room 6 of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Attendees will learn how collaboration helps to overcome business blind spots, achieve goals and improve the bottom line. This event is hosted by the Alii Networkers Chapter of Business Network International and is free for visitors. Parking at the hotel will be validated for $3.

Sam Choy featured speaker Thursday

The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins will meet at Hulihee Palace at 1 p.m. Thursday. The guest speaker is internationally known Sam Choy, chef, restaurateur, and television personality, who will talk story about the Hawaiian style of cooking.

Information of upcoming events will be discussed. The next field trip will be Sept. 30.Refreshments will follow the meeting. Guests and potential members are invited.

Hawaii Water Service meeting planned

Hawaii Water Service will host an event to answer customers’ questions about upcoming construction projects, accounting, operations, rates, and customer service. This free, family-friendly event will also feature food, giveaways and raffle prizes.

The event is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the Waikoloa Village Association Community Room, 68-1792 Melia St.

Disability legislative forum slated

West Hawaii Developmental Disabilities Committee invites the public to meet Hawaii Island’s disabilities officials and professionals during the West Hawaii Island Disability Legislative Forum.

It will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria. It is facilitated by Jesse Floyd, DOH program specialist, who can be contacted at 936-4061 or jesse.floyd@doh.hawaii.gov.

The free event will feature a forum where policymakers will answer questions about disability-related issues such as employment, housing, transportation and health. Some panel members are Andrew Tseu, Chief Dental Services branch, Mary Brogan, Chief Development Disabilities Division, Becky Pearson, DOE autism specialist, Tiffany Kai, County Council (Transportation) and Karen Eoff, county council.

Eight provider agencies have prepared booths with staff, material and information about available services.

Suicide Prevention Task Force plans candlelight vigil

The West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force has scheduled a candlelight vigil on the beach Friday for friends and family who were left behind in the wake of a loved one’s suicide.

The vigil begins at 5 p.m. on the shore of Kamakahonu Beach behind King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Attendees should bring mats, chairs or cushions for the sand. Validated parking will be offered at the hotel.

Audio news service for those with vision loss demonstrated

The National Federation of the Blind has developed NewsLine, a news service that offers local, national and international newspapers in audio format for those with vision loss.

The state coordinator for NewsLine will demonstrate its capabilities and ease of use at the National Federation of the Blind meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. Attendees will learn how to access two Hawaii papers, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and others.

The group meets monthly.
