William Joyce Jr.

William “Billy” “Jay-R” Alan Joyce Jr., 55, of Ocean View died Sept. 14, 2016, at his residence. Born in Tacoma, Wash., he was an inventor, artist, surfer and fisherman.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 24 at his mother’s home, 92-8484 Maile Drive in the Ranchos subdivision of Ocean View. Another celebration of his life will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 28 at Sandy Beach on Oahu. Aloha attire.

He is survived by mother, Patti Barry of Ocean View; sisters, Tandi (Peter) Kowalski of Honolulu, Nicole (Glenn) Wagstaff-Gasmen of Paia, Maui, Kelsey (Lloyd) Joyce of Seattle, Megan (John) Blue of Tacoma, Wash.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Robert Taggart

Robert Richard “Tag” Taggart, 64, of Hilo died Sept. 13, 2016, at The Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born Dec. 15, 1951, in Glassboro, N.J., he was a carpenter and condo manager and the senior pastor of the East Hawaii Center for Spiritual Living.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at the East Hawaii Center for Spiritual Living in Keaau. Donations may be made in his honor to the East Hawaii Center for spiritual Living’s Building Fund at hawaiicsl.org, or mailed to HCR2, Box 6277, Keaau, HI 96749.

He is survived by partner, Janet Hotchkiss of Hilo; brother, Paul (Terri) Taggart of New Jersey; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, all of New Jersey.

Stephen Sands

Stephen Donald Sands, 86, of Captain Cook died Sept. 10, 2016, at his residence. Born March 2, 1930, in Providence, R.I., he was an architectural designer and artist.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Sept. 24, 2016, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, also known as Painted Church in Honaunau for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by his nephew, Christopher Rooney of Captain Cook.

Milton Hagiwara

Milton Hagiwara, 67, of Honokaa died Aug. 25, 2016, at his residence. Born July 14, 1949, in Honokaa, he was a retired Realtor.

Private services held. No flowers. No monetary offerings.

He is survived by brothers, Leslie Hagiwara of Puako, Clifford Hagiwara of Hilo; sister, Annette Hagiwara of Honokaa; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Henrietta Gonsalves

Henrietta Pearl Gonsalves, 85, of Hilo died Sept. 14, 2016, at home. Born Nov. 4, 1930, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Visitation will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Eulogy at 9:30 a.m., funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

She is survived by, daughters, Antoinette Amii of Hilo, Olinda Diana (Jeffrey) De Rego of Honokaa, Verlann (Claude Carvalho) Gonsalves of Pahoa; sons, Don (Francine) Gonsalves Jr. of Paradise Park, Valentine (Betty Tanonaka) Gonsalves of Hilo, Tony (Peggie) Gonsalves of Mountain View; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Margaret Lopez

Margaret Lopez, 85, of Hilo died Aug. 16, 2016, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Lanai City, Lanai, she was a retired mixologist at Bar-E and Top Hat Bar in Wahiawa, Oahu, formerly employed at Marions Catering and a volunteer with the Salvation Army.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at Mililani Mortuary, mauka chapel on Oahu for a 10:15 a.m. funeral service. Burial will follow at Mililan Memorial Park. Casual attire.

Survived by daughters, Pricilla (Lonny) Banks, Ramona (Roger) Panzer, both of Keaau, Cynthia (Sonny) Edra of Nanakuli, Oahu; sons, Manuel Agcalon of Nanakuli, Oahu, Rocky Agcalon of Wahiawa, Oahu, Elias Agcolan, Jr. of Keaau; brothers, John (Quincie) Martines, Paul Martines, both of Laupahoehoe; sister, Linda Midallia of Ookala; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Errol Edward Kaufman, 73, of Volcano died Sept. 9, 2016, at his residence. Born Nov. 15, 1942, in Lansing, Mich., he was an information technology technician.

Dorothy Kumano

Dorothy Sueko Kumano, 92, of Keaau died Sept. 2, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born May 16, 1924, in Kapulena, she was a Licensed Practical Nurse who retired from the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific on Oahu, a member of the Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and Keaau Village Community Association.

Private services held. No flowers or monetary offerings.

She is survived by husband, Thomas Kumano of Keaau; son, Paul (Chris) Kumano of Kaneohe, Oahu; sister, Doris Silva of Honolulu; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Michelle West

Michelle Ann West, 61, of Waikoloa died Sept. 11, 2016, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Oct. 23, 1954, in Kansas City, Kansas, she was a teacher and an intuitive.

She is survived by husband, Michael Houser of Waikoloa; sisters, Diana West of Colorado, Cindy West of Kansas; a niece, a nephew and numerous friends.

Rhonda Broad

Rhonda Terry Broad, 61, of Hilo died Sept. 3, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a homeless outreach advocate.

A celebration of her life will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at the Glad Tidings Church in Hilo. Scattering of her ashes will take place on Oct. 8 at Leleiwi Beach Park. Casual attire.

She is survived by son, Joseph Broad of Hilo; daughter, Ruth-Ann Hayes of Hilo; brothers, Ernest Broad of Hilo, James Broad of Honolulu; sister, Susannah Broad of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Daryl Berg

Daryl Eugene Berg, 63, of Ocean View died Sept. 3, 2016, at his residence. Born Oct. 9, 1952, in Detroit, he was a retired traffic engineer. Services will be held in Michigan at a later date.

He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Berg of Canton, Mich.; brothers, Ken Berg of Michigan, Barry (Kim) Berg of Medford, Ore.; sister, Karen (Michael) Hertz of Michigan; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Richard Johnson

Richard Call Johnson, 67, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 10, 2016, at the Kona Community Hospital. Born April 5, 1949, in Tokyo, Japan, he was a retired self-employed sound engineer and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Ellen Harvey of Kailua-Kona; brothers-in-law, Vance (Christie) Harvey of Gettysburg, Pa., Vernon (Ban) Harvey of the Big Island, and hanai daughter, Autumn.

Joseph Lorenzo

Joseph “Uncle Gabby” Richard Lorenzo, 90, of Pahoa died Sept. 11, 2016, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. Born on May 6, 1926, in Waiohinu, he was a freelance coffee farmer.

He is survived by brothers, Arthur (Elizabeth) Lorenzo of Pahoa, Donald (Shirley) Lorenzo of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins; caregiver, Liberty Albano of Keaau.

Tsuruko Mabuni

Tsuruko Mabuni, 102, of Hilo died July 16, 2016, at the Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center.Born in Waiakea, she was a retired independent cane grower and a member of the Hilo Hoogani Mission.

Private family services were held. The family requests that flowers and monetary donations be omitted.

She is survived by sons, Melvin Mabuni of Kailua-Kona, George (Ellen) Mabuni of Los Angeles, Raymond (Mildred) Mabuni of Honolulu, Earl (Ellen) Mabuni of Hilo; daughter, Gail (Jack) Fujii of Hilo; brothers, Kenneth Urasaki, Seizun (Sandra) Urasaki, both of Los Angeles, Masato Urasaki of Hilo; sister, Kikue Yagi of Hilo; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kiyoshi Matsuo

Kiyoshi Matsuo, 91, of Hilo died Aug. 27, 2016, at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Papaaloa, he was a retired aircraft manufacturing inspector with Northrop Grumman, a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and a World War II Army veteran.

Private family services were held. The family requests that monetary donations be omitted.

He is survived by wife, Matsue Matsuo of Hilo; sons, Ryan (Shirley) Matsuo of Las Vegas, Lonnie Matsuo of Gardena, Calif.; daughter, Sharon Matsuo of West Los Angeles; numerous nieces and nephews.
