Kiwanis Club meets Wednesday

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, 325-6625.

All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The program will include installation of new officers and board members for the year 2016-17. Incoming Lt. Gov. Audrey Kagawa of Hilo will conduct the ceremony.

Open house planned at Kona Coffee Living History Farm

Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook will host its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The theme is “Made in Kona” and the day will offer family activities that revolve around things made in Kona, such as coffee, baked goods and farm produce. Food, a historical photo and artifact exhibit, tours of the 1920s coffee mill and farmhouse and activities are planned.

Parking is available at Kealakekua Ranch Center with shuttle service from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Amateur radio operators participate in emergency test

The American Radio Relay League and Amateur/Ham Radio operators throughout the state will participate in the annual ARRL Simulated Emergency Test from 9 a.m. to noon Hawaii time Saturday.

All amateur radio operators are invited to participate.

The purpose is to continue training with all amateur/ham radio operators and volunteers to work with state and county officials to ensure communications are maintained on all of the Hawaiian islands.

Radio operators will assist in passing emergency and time sensitive traffic to the appropriate officials.

The scenario will be a mega tsunami generated by a 9.2 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. The University of Hawaii reports that there is a 9 percent chance of such an event in the next 50 years.

Cub Scouts plan pancake breakfast

Kona Hongwanji Cub Scout Pack 12 will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and silent auction fundraiser from 7-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at Kona Hongwanji Hall in Kealakekua.

Cost is $8. This event raises money for the cubs’ fees, activities and outings.

Church forms youth groups

Grace Community Church invites area students to its youth groups.

A group for high school students meets from 6-8 p.m. on Sundays at the church. Middle school students gather from 6-7:30 p.m Fridays. There is also one monthly social event.

In addition, youth Sunday school classes meet during the church’s 10 a.m. Sunday service, right after singing is concluded. There is no Sunday school on the first Sunday of each month.
