Freemasons meet

The Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will meet Wednesday at the Kona Masonic Center, 73-5577 Kauhola St., Suite 7.

Dinner is at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at 7 and dessert follows.

Youth magic camp planned

Society for Kona’s Education and Art will host a magic camp from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10-13 for students ages 10-18.

Attendees will learn tricks of the trade with local magicians Arnie “Arneleo The Great” Rabin, Barry “The Great Barusky” Gitelson, and Bruce and Jennifer Meyers. Tuition is $75 for the week (and a SKEA 1-year family membership of $35). Scholarships are available. SKEA is at 84-5191 Mamalahoa Highway in Honaunau. Space is limited to 20 students.

Have coffee with a cop Friday

Everyone is invited to National Coffee with a Cop Day, a casual, talk-story event with area police officers. It is planned from 9-10 a.m. Friday at Starbucks inside the Kailua-Kona target.

Patent and Trademark Office experts to speak

Experts from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will offer a free workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, Hale Iako.

Attendees will learn:

• What is a patent? Why should I get one, who can file, types of patents, options for foreign filing

• What is a trademark? Selecting a strong trademark that is legally protectable and federally registered

• What is a copyright? What does a copyright protect and limitations or exception to copyrights?

Speakers Richard Cole and Susan Anthony will discuss two hypothetical cases and offer one-on-one sessions.

The event is hosted by Small Business Development Center.

Hospice of Kona volunteer training

Hospice of Kona is looking for compassionate, caring, reliable community members to be trained to help with services to patients, in the hospice office and in the community.

Volunteer training will be held from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 11, 12, 18 and 19. All four nights are mandatory to become a certified Hospice volunteer.

Hospice of Kona Community Services Center is at 75-5925 Walua Road, Suite 102. Attendees should bring a brown bag dinner. Beverages and chocolate will be provided.

Kona Orchid Society meets

The Kona Orchid Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy on Kealakaa Street.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a pupu to share. Dinner will be served at 6:15.

Louis Del Favero will be the guest speaker. He and his wife, Bonnie, own Louis Del Favero Orchids, Inc. in Tampa, Florida. Plants can be ordered online to be delivered at the meeting. He will speak about collecting orchids in the Bahamas, and discuss fragrant orchids.

Pest-free blooming orchids are welcome for be brought for display.

Suicide prevention task force seeks new members

The West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force is seeking new members and will hold its monthly meeting from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway on the corner of Hualalai Road.

Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend. The group’s mission is suicide prevention and support to families and friends who are left behind in the wake of suicide. The task force is planning the 2017 Suicide Prevention Benefit and welcomes volunteers.
