LavaKids Family Fun Runs this Saturday

On Saturday LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway beginning at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This is a free event and open to all ages.

Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.. The one-mile and 2-mile run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. with the 5K run/walk right after. This event is open to both keiki and adults.

Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5K for parents wanting to participate.

Local Big Island athletes who participated in the IRONMAN World Championship last Saturday will be there to inspire the keiki and lead them in stretching exercises before the runs.

Registration open for Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk

Runners, walkers and friendly canines of all ages are invited to sign up now to participate in the annual fundraising event.

The race begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross-country course, located on the Upper Campus.

Children 10 and under can participate for $10 each; adults $30 each, or $35 with dog. Proceeds support the Bieni Kohler-Johnson Memorial Scholarship.

Couch 2 5K program with Big Island Running Company

Big Island Running Company is offering a free Couch to 5K training program starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store. This nine-week program is designed to take beginners from the couch to finishing the Jingle Bell Beach Run on Dec. 18 at Coconut Grove Marketplace.

No prior running experience is necessary. Runs will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well. For more information, call or email Melissa at 808-327-9333 or melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.

Kiwanis Club’s 2nd annual golf tournament

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona is sponsoring it’s second annual golf tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Makalei Country Club.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and a shot-gun start begins at 8:30 a.m. Format is 2 Person Scramble with 3 flights.

Prizes will be awarded for each flight based on gross score. Entry fee is $120 per person and includes continental breakfast, green fees, Mulligans (2), prizes, closest to pin, straight drive. long drive contests and awards luncheon with silent and live auctions.

The proceeds for this event will be used by Kiwanis to serve the many needs of children here on the Big Island.

LavaKids hosts Waimea Bike Fest

The Waimea Bike Fest will take place on Oct 30 at the Anna Ranch Heritage Center in Waimea starting at 9 a.m.. The event will include free activities such as the LavaKids Trail Run, PATH Bike Rodeo, Keiki Exploration Bike Ride, Strider Keiki Races(ages 2-12)and a Halloween Pumpkin Hunt.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes.

Parker School’s 17th annual George Heneghan Fun Run/Color Stampede

Parker school will host its annual 5K fun run and 1K keiki run on Oct. 30 at 7:30 a.m. on the school’s lower campus in Waimea.

All the proceeds benefit Parker School’s athletic program. For adults and kids over 12, the entry fee is $30. Kids 11-and-under are free.

Deadline to register is Oct. 14 to receive a race kit, which includes glasses, t-shirt, bracelet and color packet. Race-day check-in opens at 6:45 a.m.

Biddy Basketball Registration

The Kohala Community Athletic Association is currently holding free Biddy Basketball registration through Nov. 2 for all Kohala youth ages 5-8. Registration can be done online at kcaa.online. 12th annual I.K.L. Karate Championship

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Kona Branch of the International Karate League (IKL) will be hosting their 12th annual I.K.L. Karate Championship from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Kealakehe High School.

IKL Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California will be attending the event.

In addition, other traditional karate schools throughout Hawaii Island have been invited to participate in the tournament.

A special guest, the Founder and Chief Instructor of the IKL, Shihan (Master) Walter K. Nishioka, who splits his time between Hawaii and the Mainland, will be presiding over the event.

The tournament will feature competition in Kata (Forms), Kumite (Sparring), and Kobudo (Weaponry), for children, teenagers, and adults.

Other martial art instructors from different styles will be in attendance and available to the public to answer any questions about their respective style of martial art.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free. The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation is a proud sponsor of this event that promotes sportsmanship, respect and good will among its competitors.

37th annual Brantley Center Benefit Tennis Tournament

The 37th Annual Brantley Center Benefit Tennis Tournament will take place Nov. 5 and 6 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Seaside Tennis Club. The non-USTA sanctioned tournament is a benefit for the Brantley Center, a services provider for people with disabilities, located in Honokaa.

The round-robin tournament will be played by teams of at least four players (minimum two women and two men). A team match will consist of a women’s and a men’s double pro set, followed by two simultaneous mixed doubles matches of one pro set each.

Entry fees are $40 per person, with discounts for families entering three or more members. Lunch and drinks will be available both days. The deadline to enter is 6 p.m. on Nov. 2. For more information and application forms email Al Honey at ibeahoney@hotmail.com.

5K Run/Walk for Literacy in Waikoloa

FL-WR will be holding its 7th annual Walk/Run for Literacy on Nov. 12. Participants may pre-register at flwr-runforliteracy.com/2016/. The event will start and end at the Waikoloa School parking lot.

The race will start at 7:30 a.m. with on-site registration starting at 6:15 a.m.

Cost is $20 for adults pre-registered online, $30 for on race day, and $10 for keiki (12-and-under). Price includes an event T-shirt. Keiki in strollers are free. T-shirts are only guaranteed if registered before Oct. 15.

After the Walk/Run, there will a silent auction and a free health fair.

Kona VFW hosting golf fundraiser

Kona VFW post 12122 will hold a joint golf tournament with Makalie Golf Club on Nov. 12,

The tourney will have a shot gun start at the Makalei Club course with prizes and skill challenges on designated holes.

As in past tournaments, fees will be reasonable for easy community participation.

The Miracle Mile and Turkey Trot

The Miracle Mile, “Turkey Trot” will be hosted by Big Island Sports Academy in cooperation with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department and the LavaKids program, on Nov. 19.

The Miracle Mile will feature a one mile straight away, at the Ane Keohokaole Hwy, below Kealakehe High School, gentle sloping hard surface course. Parking and restroom facilities will be available at the High School or West Hawaii Civic Center.

Age groups featuring a keiki division, up through Kupuna will be included in the event. The male and female winners in each event will be awarded a turkey, and second and third place winners will be able to win an assortment of holiday pies. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and races will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The “Out n Back” Training Time Trial/Sunday Ride

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 5th annual 19.5 mile “Out n Back” Training Time Trial will be held on Nov. 20 at 7 a.m.

A non-competitive Sunday Ride will start shortly after the last time trial competitor.

The “Out N Back” is an excellent tune up ride for the bicycle segment of the (Tri)ptophan Turkey Day Triathlon.

“Out n Back” registration is from 6:30 – 6:45 a.m. on Pukiawe Street off of Ka’iminani Drive, 0.1mile mauka from the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

The “Out n Back” starts at Ka’iminani Drive and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway and travels North 13.5 miles to the 80 mile marker. Riders will then make a U Turn and returns to the 86 mile marker. Police will direct traffic at the U Turn.

This event is free to Hawaii Cycling Club 2016/17 and 2016 annual members. Non-members will pay a $10 one-day membership fee. The annual membership fee is $20.

Participants and volunteers will gather at The Talk Story aid station after the event for food and beverages.
