Quilt talk offered
Author Loretta G. H. Woodard, textile conservator Linda Hee, and Deborah H. Dunn, the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project board president, will discuss Hawaiian quilts during this month’s Kona Historical Society Hanohano O Kona lecture.
Recognized the world over for their bright colors and bold graphic designs, Hawaiian quilts reflect the island lifestyle and flora where they were made. From 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Woodard, Hee and Dunn will be presenting “Communities of Quilters on Hawaii Island” and discussing the fascinating history and evolution of Hawaiian quilts and their care.
The lecture is slated 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center in Kailua-Kona.

Keiki story time Wednesday
A keiki story time at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday will feature stories, crafts and snacks all about Cats. Featured books are “Cat in the Hat,” “Pete the Cat” and newly released, “They All Saw a Cat” by Brendan Wenzel.
Keiki are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories bookstore will be hosting a story time best suited for children ages 3-7.
A $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snacks. Space is limited to 24 children and Reservations are required by calling 324-0350. Check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories Book Store.
Kiwanis Club meets, plans golf tournament
Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, 325-6625.
All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The program will include a short presentation by Judy Donovan, regional director of marketing and strategic planning for Kona Community Hospital, as well as final discussion and planning for the club’s second annual golf tournament fundraiser to be held Oct. 29 at Makalai Golf Club.
Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Free movie shown at civic center
Elderly Recreation Services and the Big Island Film office will be hold a movie day at the West Hawaii Civic Center at 10 a.m. Wednesday. This month’s movie will be “Charade” and will be shown in County Council Chambers, Building A.

Cruise night includes car hop service
Lanihau Center and IHOP restaurant will take Kailua-Kona back to the ‘50s with car hop service by the roller skating gals from the Echo City Knockouts roller derby team. The event is from 6-9 p.m. Saturday.
Menu will include the classic burger and fries and milkshakes.
Dozens of classic cars, hot rods, trucks and customs will be on display. DJ Gavin Todd will be the guest emcee spinning the retro music and giving away prizes donated by Lanihau Center merchants andarea businesses.
The event is a benefit for the local Food Basket. Attendees should bring a bag of rice or other nonperishable food items. Cash donations will also be accepted.
Value added products workshop planned
West Hawaii Small Business Development Center and Central Pacific Bank will host a value added products workshop geared to small scale agricultural producers.
Topics include technical knowledge about the food product development process and the specialty food industry requirements. Participants will also learn about marketing, how pricing can be affected, industry vocabulary and expectations from grocers and retailer.
Nancy Ginter-Miller West Hawaii SBDC’s business advisor will present the workshop from 9-11:30 a.m. Thursday at Kuakini Tower, Suite 209.
