Little fire ant forum Thursday
A forum will offer information on how to prevent and control little fire ants. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hawaii Community College — Palamanui. Doors open at 5:30.
Hawaii Ant Lab, State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, Big Island Invasive Species Committee and County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development will offer presentations.
Bird hunting season opens soon
The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of the 2016-17 game bird hunting season Nov. 5.
Biologists are predicting a below average season with lingering drought impacts in many parts of the state. The fall game bird hunting season will run through Jan. 29. A valid hunting license and a game bird stamp are required for all game bird hunting on public and private land.
* Mauna Kea Game Management Area and Forest Reserve and Puu Mali Mitigation Site will be open for game bird hunting Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays for the entire season.
* Pohakuloa Training Area
* Kapapala Ranch Cooperative, Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays.
* Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
* Puuanahula GMA, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
* Kaohe Game Management area mitigation site, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
* Kipuka Ainahou, weekends and holidays throughout the game bird hunting season. A special permit is required, and is available from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife offices in Hilo and Waimea and at the Puu Huluhulu or Kaumana Hunter Check Station.
* Kahua/Ponoholo Ranch special permit area, weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) Dec. 17 through Jan. 15.
Keiki Dream Car contest underway
What could future cars look like? This is the question that the sixth annual Toyota Hawaii Dream Car Art Contest is asking keiki 15 years old and younger. The contest gives keiki the chance to share their ideas about the future of mobility by drawing their dream cars.
Entries will be accepted to Jan. 13, then 10 entries in each age category will be selected for final judging on Feb. 27. The age categories are: Under 8, 8-12, 12-15.
The grand prize winner in each age category will win an iPad mini 4, while the first and second runners-up will each receive $100. The top three entries from each age group also will be submitted for judging in TMC World Competition where winners could win an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan.
Participants may submit hand-drawn colorful artwork on 11×17 paper to any Toyota Hawaii dealership or mailed to: Toyota Dream Car Art Contest c/o Toyota Hawaii P.O. Box 2788 Honolulu, HI 96803.
Bianchi makes dean’s list
Colorado State University’s College of Natural Science has named Rachael Bianchi, of Kailua-Kona to the dean’s list. The honor is appointed to students with a 3.75 grade point average or above on at least 12 graded units of coursework. Bianchi has graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences.
