Berj Hagopian

Berj Hagopian, 91, of Kailua-Kona died Nov. 2, 2016, at his residence. Born May 4, 1925, in Chicago, he was a retired engineer, an entrepreneur and was the previous owner of The Mask and My Bar in Kona. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at noon Nov. 10 at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by wife, Lida Hagopian of Kailua-Kona; son, Charles Hagopian of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Kimberly Hagopian of Los Angeles, Karen Hagopian of Kailua-Kona; two grandchildren.

Evelyn Kagawa

Evelyn “Lyn” Riyeko Kagawa, 94, of Hilo died Oct. 26, 2016, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born June 22, 1922, in Tacoma, Wash., she was the retired owner of the former Hata’s Inc., a board member of Hawaii Island Adult Care and member of Church of the Holy Cross, Piihonua Community Association, RSVP, Reach to Recovery – American Cancer Society, Kumamoto Doshi Kai, and Silver Steppers.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. Urn committal service follows at 2 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by son, Dennis (Sue) Kagawa of Hilo; daughters, Eileen (Les) Wagatsuma and Pearl (Sheldon) Takasaki of Hilo; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Sharon Abran

Sharon Ann Abran, 67, of Haina died Oct. 16, 2016, at the Hale Hoola Hamakua. Born in Kittery, Maine, she was a homemaker.

Friends may call from 9–11 a.m. Nov. 12 at the Honokaa Methodist Church for an 11 a.m. funeral service. Cremation to follow. Casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Robert Abran Sr. of Haina; daughters, Debra (James) Gonsalves of Hilo, Sheri (Rex) Thompson of Hawi, Sandra (Boyd) Brumaghim of Kailua-Kona, Daphne (Moku Colon) Abran of Haina; sons, Robert (Dustie’Lee) Abran Jr. of Kailua-Kona, Desman Abran of Kent, Wash.; hanai daughter, Charene Roer of N.C.; hanai son, Keala Drummondo of Waimea; siblings, Erlan Jr., Mary, Donna, Pam and Debbie, all of Kittery, Maine; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Charlotte Huddy

Charlotte Diane Huddy, 78, of Waimea died Sept. 14, 2016, at her residence. Born Aug. 12, 1938, in Honolulu she was an accountant for Huddy Beetle Clinic and a member of the Imiola Congregational Church.

A visitation will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. Nov. 12 at the Imiola Congregational Church in Waimea with a 10:30 a.m. celebration of life. Family requests casual attire.

She is survived by daughter, Desiree (Logan) Huddy-Akau of Waimea; son, John (Nancy) Cavaco of Kaneohe, Oahu; sister, Martha Carson of Waimea; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ernest Matsumoto

Ernest Yutaka Matsumoto, 82, of Hilo died Oct. 6, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1934, in Kohala, he was an Army veteran and retired as an airline agent for Hawaiian Airlines.

Visitation is planned at 8 a.m. Nov. 12 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo with a 10 a.m. blessing.

He is survived by wife, Maryalice Matsumoto of Hilo; sons, Rick (Melanie) Matsumoto of Kurtistown, Lawrence (Sandra) Matsumoto of Mountain View, Christopher Matsumoto of Oahu, David (Esther) Matsumoto, Ernest (Cindy) Matsumoto Jr., both of Hilo; daughters, Rita (Mark) Matsumoto of Oahu, Ernestine (Theron) Matsumoto of Hilo; sister, Elsie Phlum of Hilo; 22 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roman Oili

Roman Moana Oili, 55, of Hilo died Oct. 23, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. He was born May 3, 1961, in Hilo.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at Leleiwi Beach Park with a 10 a.m. celebration of life. Scattering of his ashes will follow. Casual attire.

He is survived by daughters, Edene (Dexter) Garcia of Waianae, Oahu, Kanoi (Rory) Oili-Olguin of Colorado; son, Keahi Oili of Colorado; hanai son, Kawika (Michelle) Tokita of Kona; mother, Thelma Spencer of Holualoa; brothers, Richard Oili Jr. of Pahoa, Ricky Kahaopea of New Mexico and Kalai Poaha of Honolulu, Oahu; sisters, Roxanne (Victor) Poaha of Panaewa, Rosane Oili of Texas, Rhona (Nazarene) Deuibar of Ocean View and Raquel Oili of Salt Lake City, Utah; 11 grandchildren; two hanai grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ira Poindexter Jr.

Ira Chapman Poindexter Jr., 78, of Hilo died Oct. 13, 2016, at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, he was an audio and visual technician and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Friends may call from 9–10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Papaaloa where a memorial Mass will be held at 10. Casual attire.

He is survived by son, Ira (Valerie) Poindexter III of Ookala; brother, Thomas (Hannelore) Poindexter of Arizona; one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Seto

Carolyn Hanako Seto, 91, of Hilo died Oct. 10, 2016, at her family’s residence. Born Feb. 11, 1925, in Ahualoa, she was a retired clerk for First Hawaiian Bank, a teacher’s aide at Christ Lutheran Nursery School, and a member of the Lutheran Women’s Ministry League and the Waiakea Houselots Lower Association.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 12 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hilo. The family requests casual attire worn. In lieu of flowers monetary gifts may be made in her honor to North Hawaii Hospice at 65-1328 Kawaihae Rd., Kamuela, HI. 96743.

She is survived by sons, Lester (Bernadette) Seto of Waikoloa, Emmett (Juliet Maltezo) Seto; brother, Bob Ishikuro of Honokaa, and sister, Judy Ogata of Hilo; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
