Gary Safarik

Gary Steven Safarik, 67, of Keaau died Oct. 28, 2016, at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Honolulu, he was the president and owner of Western Pacific Communication and Electronics, Inc. and a former Hawaii County councilman.

Friends may call at from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Safarik residence in Paradise Park, Keaau for a memorial gathering. Info: 443-1264. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Debbie Safarik of Hilo; daughter, Desha (Ric) Ramos of Honolulu; sister, Carolyn Johnson of San Diego; two grandchildren; one niece, one nephew.

Robert Hoffman

Robert A. Hoffman, 85, of Hawaiian Paradise Park died Oct. 25, 2016, at Pohai Malama. Born in Terra Haute, Ind., he served in the National Guard, U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps Reserve veteran, retired VP Boise Cascade real estate division, former co-owner and general manager Hilo Naniloa Resort, former commercial pilot and flight instructor, Past Master Kilauea Masonic Lodge, 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Hilo Masonic Temple with a 1 p.m. service. Refreshment will follow.

He is survived by wife, Shirley Hoffman, son, Edward; daughter, Roberta (Donovan) Cho; seven grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren.

ClarkDan Kamanawa

ClarkDan Kaopua Kamanawa, 61, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 22, 2016, at Kona Community Hospital. Born March 25, 1955, in Kealakekua, he was a laborer for the former Kamehameha Investment Corporation, Kakoupu Construction, C &H Ishii Contracting, Kona Contracting, a former baggage handler for Grayline Tour Company and a former pineapple picker.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Old Kona Airport Makaeo Events Pavilion and a service is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 390106, Keauhou, HI 96739.

He is survived by wife, Loreen Kamanawa; sons, Chad (Kelly) Hose, Sonny Kamanawa, Waylon (Alisha) Kamanawa, all of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Leinora Howell of El Paso, Texas, ChannaLee Kamanawa of Kailua-Kona; brother, Francis (Jodi) Kamanawa of Parachute, Colo.; hanai sister, Noreen Kunitomo of Kailua-Kona; six grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Christensen

Marilyn Jenkins Christensen, 97, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 19, 2016, at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born April 20, 1919, in San Francisco, she was a retired administrator at UC Davis, a member of Dance Hawaii and the Lanakila Congregational Church.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 27 at Lanakila Congregational Church in Kainaliu. Fellowship will follow in the church hall. The family requests casual attire and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Kona.

She is survived by daughter, Lynne Christensen of Kailua-Kona; one grandson; one great-granddaughter.

Michael Ivers

Michael Terrence Ivers, 69, of Hilo died Oct. 24, 2016, at home. Born May 28, 1947, in Chicago, he retired as the president of Yuma Community Food Bank.

Yoshiko Miyamoto

Yoshiko Miyamoto, 89, of Hilo died Oct. 24, 2016, at her residence. Born in Ishigaki City, Okinawa, Japan, she was the proprietress and chef at the former Y’s Lunch Shop, member of the Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Mission, Deigo Kai and Hui Okinawa.

Private services held.

She is survived by daughters, Janie (Eizo) Kotaki of Hilo and Tokyo, Iris (Rodney) Kim of Mililani, Oahu; sisters, Fusae Kanamaru of Naha City, Okinawa, Japan, Chieko Ikemiya of Naha City, Okinawa, Japan, Takeko Tanigawa of Milan, Ohio; three grandsons; twin great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
