Coffee and pastry event benefits Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii and Daylight Mind Coffee Co. will host a coffee and pastry pairing event to raise funds and awareness about Habitat’s 2017 Blitz Build.
The event is from 8-11 a.m. Saturday at the end of the Kona Coffee Festival and will feature four coffee and pastry pairing stations, with live music and guest speakers from both organizations.
Habitat will build 10 new homes in 10 days in the Lai Opua neighborhood in September.
Tickets can be purchased at habitatwesthawaii.org/events. All proceeds go toward the Home Builders Program, which helps Habitat West Hawaii in its mission to provide everyone in West Hawaii with a safe, decent, and affordable place to live.
Kona Science Cafe presents alien worlds off our coast
Jan War, operations manager at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority will discuss the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory program at UH-Manoa and present results and video inspection dives of deep seawater pipelines off NELHA performed recently by two three-man, deep-diving submersibles. The high-definition video also reveals deep sea critters that grow on or nearby the pipelines.
The talk is from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center.
NELHA operates three deep seawater pipelines that draw up cold, nutrient rich seawater from depths ranging between 2,000-3,000 feet. This is a zone completely alien from the land and surface waters and not easy to access.
The talk includes time before and after the presentation for questions, answers and networking. The program is part of a monthly pau hana series for people interested in technology in West Hawaii. All are welcome. A potluck is included with the event. Attendees should bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

Family homelessness summit planned
The faith-based community and nonprofit sector will gather from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday to address family homelessness.
Summit attendees will receive information on the state of family homelessness, opportunities to provide support and connection to a network of resources available.
The event includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Attendees should arrive at 8 a.m. to sign in, eat a pastry and drink coffee. Register by 10 p.m. Sunday on Eventbrite.com. Attendees are also encouraged to present an printed Eventbrite ticket for a chance to win a door prize.

Seniors meet Wednesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai for a member’s-only special event.
November birthdays of members will be celebrated. Attendees should bring canned food items for the Food Basket.
