KAILUA-KONA — There’s no mystery as to the reason.
Helen Vailu’u wants to make sure no families go without over the holiday weekend.
“We just want to make sure everyone has a Thanksgiving meal,” said Vailu’u, founder of the volunteer-led nonprofit, King’s Daughters Ministry, which has been handing out free turkeys to anyone who needs one every Thanksgiving since 2004.
On Saturday, the group will be doing it again. Those interested in getting one of the 200 birds should contact the organization by 5 p.m. today, where they’ll get a ticket. Then, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, they can take that ticket to the organization’s building at 79-7401 Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua. People should have ID, but there are no other prerequisites to getting on the list. It’s for anyone.
Even if they don’t get a ticket Friday, people can show up Saturday and the group will try and get them on a list to get a turkey sometime next week.
“It means a lot,” Vailu’u said of the people who have expressed gratitude for the seasonal giving. “A lot of people appreciate it.”
