HAM radio enthusiasts meet
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at NELHA.
All members, friends, and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited. The group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month.
Attendees should bring a dish to share during the Japanese themed potluck.

Kamehameha Schools offers graduate degree scholarships
Applications for Kamehameha Schools’ Imi Naauao graduate degree scholarships, for the 2017-18 school year, are now available online, through the Hawaii Community Foundation, at hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/students.. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2017.
The merit-based scholarship is for graduate students. It is limited to two years of awarding per recipient, regardless of degree progression.
Recipients must be residents of Hawaii, attend an accredited institution within the United States and be a graduate (post baccalaureate) degree-seeking student. They must carry a minimum GPA of 3.0, attain two letters of recommendation and submit a curriculum vitae which highlights academic achievements, leadership experiences, community service/civic involvement and honors and awards.
If awarded, recipients would be required to perform 50 community service hours by December and 100 community service hours by July.
Preference is given for previous year’s recipients who have not already received the maximum funding from Kamehameha Schools.
Masons to install new officers
A new line of officers will be installed at the Kona Masonic Center at 10 a.m. Dec. 3.
Bob Brogan will be the master of the lodge. Chris Domino will be senior warden, Troy Gibson will be junior warden, Bob Foerster, will be treasurer and Lee Meyerson, PM, will be secretary. Other men will take the positions to which they are appointed.
Following the installation there will be a pot luck luncheon at Old Kona Airport Park Pavilion No. 3. Reservations are required.

Free photos with the Grinch
Kona Stories Community Book Store celebrates Small Business Saturday when shoppers are encouraged to spend at least one day during the holiday shopping season supporting small, local businesses.
The store also celebrates its 10th anniversary over Thanksgiving weekend. Kona Stories T-shirts will be sold for $20. Those who wear them to the event receive 5 percent off their purchases. Shoppers can also have their photos taken with the Grinch from 1-3 p.m. and will receive free gift wrapping, birthday cake and a glass of Brenda’s sangria. There will also be giveaways.
Live music will be performed in the Keauhou Shopping Center courtyard, including an appearance from the West Hawaii County Band.

Private, public interest law firm expands to Kona
Hawaii Disability Legal Services, LLLC opened its Kona office Nov. 1.
The private, public interest law firm based in Honolulu works to ensure individuals with disabilities in Hawaii have access to the medical care they need and the financial resources they require.
Looking to provide Hawaii Island residents with legal representation before the Social Security Administration, Paula S. Boyer, formally of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, will head up the Kona operation. Her office is at the Big Island Federal Credit Union Building, 75-5737 Kuakini Highway Suite 104 in Kailua-Kona.
Ashley Kaono and Diane C. Haar of the Honolulu office will provide support. Haar will also provide assistance for Big Island residents who were recently denied benefits at a Social Security hearing and wish to appeal. An accredited VA Disability attorney, she will additionally offer limited representation to veterans appealing denials before the VA, including the Court of Appeals of Veterans Claims.
