‘The Magic Flute’ to be shown Saturday

The Metropolitan Opera HD series will present “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on Saturday.

In a magic forest, we meet a ferocious dragon, brave, handsome prince (Pamino), a handsome but not-so-brave bird-catcher (Papageno), the Queen of the Night whose aria is among the legends of opera, and a Magic Flute. The action goes to the Palace of the Enchanter, Sarastro, whose beautiful daughter, Pamina, may be held prisoner — or is she being held safely from her vindictive mother, the Queen of the Night? The action, the pageantry, the comedy and drama eventually bringing together two young couples move swiftly through two acts of some of the most beloved music Mozart ever composed. Love finds the way. This show is best for keiki age 10 and older.

“The Nutcracker,” performed in all its magnificence by the Bolshoi Ballet, is Dec. 18. This beautiful performance will delight ballet-lovers of all ages, including our younger keiki.

On Jan. 22, the Bolshoi Ballet performs a full-length ballet, telling the story of “The Sleeping Beauty.” Here, keiki may shiver at the wicked witch and her spell, oooh and aaah at the beauty of the Princess who falls asleep after she pricks her finger on a spindle, and the prince who battles through the 100 years’ jungle of brambles to awake the sleeping beauty with a kiss.

All of these HD performances are shown at the Regal Makalapua Stadium 10 theater located at the Makalapua Shopping Center. Starting times are 12:30 p.m. or 12:55 p.m. Prices for the opera are between $22 (senior, children) and $24 (adults). Ballet prices are between $16 and $19. To purchase tickets in advance or for more information, visit www.fandango.com, the theater box office or call (844) 462 7342.
