HONOLULU (AP) — An infant has died after a family was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street in Waimanalo, police said.

The baby, Donovan Naleieha, was taken to hospital with critical injuries Monday night and died Tuesday, according to family members. His 24-year-old mother, Dijannia Hicks, and 3-year-old brother, Damien, were also struck while crossing at a crosswalk on Monday evening. The father was not hurt. Relatives say Hicks is pregnant.

Genevieve Kalahiki, the boy’s aunt, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that Damien is fighting for his life.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested Monday night for investigation of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, driving without a license, endangering the welfare of a minor and other offenses. Police say the woman fled the scene after hitting the family with the pickup truck.

Authorities believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

Lynn Mattson told KHON-TV that she heard the crash from her home and went outside to help the family. She said she held the baby in her arms until the ambulance arrived and found the baby stroller stuck underneath the truck.

“It breaks my heart, it really does,” Mattson told the TV station. “Last night I know I was in shock walking around with him, but I cannot imagine.”
