Man dies week after apparent drowning in South Kohala

Hawaii Island police are investigating a possible drowning in South Kohala.

At 6:34 p.m. on Dec. 5, officers responded to a report that an unresponsive man had been pulled out of a pool at a private home off South Kaniku Drive. When police arrived, Hawaii Fire Department medics were transporting the victim to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

He was pronounced dead Monday at 3:58 p.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department. The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Gavaskar Atyam of Redmond, Washington.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
