Christmas celebration planned in Hamakua

Island Faith Center invites the public to its Christmas celebration at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Papaaloa Gym. Turn makai at the 24-mile marker on the Hamakua Coast.

The event includes Christmas carols, an inspirational Christmas movie titled “Christmas With a Capital ‘C,’” gifts and refreshments. The event is geared toward the entire family.

Island Faith Center is a church plant from New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo, and is part of the Foursquare denomination.

Kona Science Cafe coming up

This month’s Kona Science Cafe is a geography double-header featuring a faculty member and undergraduate geography student from Sam Houston State University. They will share their perspective on Hawaii Island aquarium fisheries management and the Hawaiian influence on mainland blues culture.

“The Sustainability of the Marine Aquarium Fish Industry on the Big Island of Hawaii” is an analysis of the overall sustainability of the marine aquarium industry along the Kona coast. It offers an outsider’s perspective on a local issue.

“The Impact of Aloha on American Music: Hawaiian Influences in the Birthplace of the Blues” will be presented by John Strait as he discusses the role of Hawaiian music within the processes responsible for the evolution of American blues music and culture. Strait is a professor of geography who specializes in sociocultural, urban and ethnic geography.

This event is from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19 at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center. A potluck is included with the event. Bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

December solstice yoga class planned

A December solstice yoga class is planned from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Yano Hall in Kealakekua.

Students learn to optimize the benefits of yoga by feeling the essence and purpose of each pose while exercising mindful breathing. Marya Mann is offering the class by donation.
