Teen Readers in Kona meet today

Teen Readers in Kona, a reading club for book sharing, snacks and socializing, is today at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. event will be held on the lanai of the library where members will discuss “Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo.

Nonfiction book club meets Tuesday

Kona Stories hosts a nonfiction book club discussing “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America” by Erik Larson on Tuesday.

The group meets at 6 p.m. at the store. Book groups are free if books are purchased at Kona Stories, or a $5 donation is requested.

The book tells the story of two men’s obsessions with the Chicago World’s Fair, one its architect, the other a murderer. The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction.

Cookbook devoted to musubi hits shelves

Musubi is set to take off as America’s newest snack food. Undoubtedly a favorite snack in Hawaii, its popularity spread to the mainland with former Hawaii residents who took this amazing food with them to share with friends and neighbors.

In Hawaii, musubi is found wherever ready-to-eat food is sold. It is eaten at all times of the day and often shows up at potlucks, gatherings, and celebrations.

“Hawaiian-Style Musubi Cookbook” is Hawaii’s first recipe book devoted entirely to musubi. More than 80 creative and delicious recipes integrate Hawaii’s favorite foods like teriyaki, katsu, and chili with the traditional nori wrapper and rice.

The books authors, Ashley Oshiro, born and raised on Kauai, and her husband, Tom Kowach, inventor of Ko Craft Mo Bettah and Bambucha musubi makers, have taken musubi to the next level showing how versatile this home-cooked food can be and how easy it is to prepare at home. Some of the dishes include mochiko chicken musubi, beef katsu musubi, beef teriyaki musubi, and of course, Spam musubi.
