Kahaluu, Spencer beach closure scheduled announced
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announces its 2017 closure schedule for Kahaluu Beach Park and Spencer Park. Monthly closures allow crews to maintain and repair high-use parks without exposing park patrons to potential hazards.
Kahaluu Beach Park will be closed until 10 a.m. on the first or second Tuesday of each month. The closure dates are Jan. 10, Feb. 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, July 11, Aug. 1, Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5.
Spencer Park will be closed Jan. 11-12, Feb. 8, 9, March 8, 9, April 12, 13, May 9-11, Sept. 12-14, Oct. 11, 12, Nov. 8, 9, Dec. 13, 14.

Senior ID cards issued
The Coordinated Services of the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division issues Senior ID cards for those age 60 or older Monday through Friday at the Aging &Disability Resource Center in Hilo.
Cards will be issued from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa, from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 9 at Naalehu Community Center, from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 9 at the Kohala Coordinated Services of the Elderly, from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the Kailua-Kona Walmart. Cards will also be issued from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 24 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25.

Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force meets
The Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force meets from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room of West Hawaii Community Health Center, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway.

Senior Roundtable Hui meets
The Senior Roundtable Hui will discuss “Computers and Me” Tuesday. The group meets from 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday at Pink Mocha Cafe, mauka of Home Depot.
Discussion includes pros and cons of owning a computer, their usage and repair.
The format will be interactive and all age groups are invited. The group meets monthly to discuss an aging topic on the first Wednesday of every month. The format for the first hour is on the monthly topic with the last-half hour dedicated to a question and answer time that may also cover other aging issues. The meeting is free.

Volunteers sought to restore Hawaiian rainforest
Volunteers may help ensure the future of the Hawaiian rainforest at the summit of Kilauea volcano and volunteer for Stewardship at the Summit programs in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Stewardship at the Summit begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon and is planned on Jan. 6, 14, 21 and 27, Feb. 3, 11, 18 and 20 and March 3, 10, 18, 25 and 31. Feb. 20 is Presidents Day and fee-free.
Volunteers help remove invasive, nonnative plant species that prevent native plants from growing. Meet project leaders Paul and Jane Field at Kilauea Visitor Center at 8:45 a.m. on any of the above dates. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, raingear, day pack, snacks and water. Gloves and tools are provided. No advance registration is required, and there is no cost to participate, but park entrance fees apply.

Volunteers have dedicated more than 7,500 hours of their time, and have restored more than 61 acres of native rainforest within the national park since 2012.
Hawaii Community Foundation offers $4.8 million in FLEX grants
Hawaii Community Foundation will distribute $4.8 million of unrestricted funds to 216 Hawaii-based high-performing nonprofit organizations that can be used at their discretion to support operations, infrastructure, or programs. The FLEX Grants Program, as part of its Advancing Nonprofit Excellence Initiative, was created to maximize donors and funding partners gifts in support of nonprofits that achieve successful results and have a strong impact on the community.

Hui Laulima monthly meeting planned
West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the Salvation Army, 75-223 Kalani St., Kailua-Kona.
Dawn Henry, managing attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, will discuss the Kokua Kupuna Project and other services provided by Legal Aid.
The Hui Laulima (which translates to groups working together) is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals. It encourages collaboration particularly around matters affecting West Hawaii’s youth and families.
