Several groups of hikers were trapped in Waimanu Valley because heavy rains caused the stream to become impassable on Sunday.

The Hawaii Fire Department reported five people hiked out of Waimanu Valley to a location that had mobile phone coverage and called 911 to notify authorities of the situation shortly before 3 p.m.

Upon arrival, the fire department’s Company 8 set up the landing zone near the Waipio Valley lookout and extracted 15 people from the north side of the Waimanu Valley floor. All 15 people were uninjured and denied emergency medical services. The rescue was complete before 6 p.m.

The five people who called 911 hiked out safely to Waipio Valley at 8:30 p.m.
