Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Jan. 1 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were under age 21.

So far this year, there have been 25 DUI arrests compared with 21 during the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent.

Kona officers arrested 10 of the drivers while Puna officers arrested nine and South Hilo officers six.

There have been 26 major accidents so far this year compared with 31 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.1 percent. So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in two fatalities, compared with no fatal crashes during the same period last year.
