Vaitea Alani

Vaitea Alani is survived by mother, Masina Ropati, among others. The name was misspelled in a previously published obituary because of information provided to the newspaper.

Ramona Calhoun

Mrs. Ramona G. Calhoun, 92, of Hilo, died at the Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center on Dec. 25, 2016. She was born in Maui and was a homemaker. She was also a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the First Missionary Baptist Church, Kapiolani St., Hilo, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 21, where a memorial service will be held at 9:30. Friends may also call at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Columbarium at noon Jan. 24 for urn committal services. The family requests that casual attire be worn to the services.

She is survived by husband, Ronald Calhoun of Hilo; sons, Larry Rios of Ocean View, Rodolfo (Anita) Rios of Pahoa, Wayne Calhoun of Kailua-Kona, and Daniel (Juana) Calhoun of Utah; daughter, Kathleen (Stanley) Taylor of Texas; sister, Pat Benaro of Hilo; sister-in-law; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Anthony Aguiar

Anthony Roy Aguiar, 78, of Hilo died Nov. 29, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired meat department manager with the former Sure Save Supermarkets and a Navy veteran.

Friends may call from 4-5 p.m. Jan. 21 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Jan. 23 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 for an urn committal service. The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted.

He is survived by daughter, Terrie Aguiar of Honolulu, Ann (Leonard) Aguiar-Sagon of Hilo; brother, Robert Aguiar of Hilo; one granddaughter.

Herbert Akana Jr.

Herbert “Herb” Aiona Akana Jr., 58, of Hilo died Jan. 3, 2017, in Hilo. Born in North Kona, he was a construction worker from Jas. W. Glover and Isemoto Contracting Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Jan. 21 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. Cremation follows. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by hanai parents, Raymond and Winnie Agpoon of Hilo; hanai brothers, Raymond (Ada) Agpoon Jr. of Puna, Chad (Teresa) Agpoon of Hilo; hanai sisters, Jocelyn (Dino) Sentino of Hilo, Kimberly (Ryan) Omine of Honolulu, Kelly (Jon) Nerveza of Hilo, Casey (Phillip) Vierra of Puna; sisters, Genevieve (John) Veriato of Puna, Elizabeth Clarke of Hilo, Sharon Akana, Lei (Lenox) Chock, both of Honolulu; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Samuel Hudman

Samuel Kealoha Hudman, 55, of Keaau died Jan. 1, 2017, at home. Born Feb. 16, 1961, he was a retired truck driver and groundskeeper for the former Naniloa Golf Course.

A celebration of his life will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 21 at Palekai (Radio Bay in Keaukaha). Very casual attire is requested and no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Laureen (Tasaka) Hudman of Keaau; son, Dustin Hudman-Tasaka of Las Vegas; hanai son, Alan (Monica) Hudman of Keaau; brothers, Glenn (Cris) Hudman of Kurtistown, Billy (Arlene) Hudman of Kona, Ronald (Bea) Hudman of Keaukaha; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herman Hernaez

Herman Estraela Hernaez, 94, of Hawi died Dec. 12, 2016, at his residence. Born Dec. 12, 1922, in San Jose, Nueve Ecija, Philippines, he was a retired payroll timekeeper for Kohala Sugar Mill, night auditor for both Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and the Mauna Lani Bay and Bungalows, laborer at Kohala Nursery and member of the American Legion and the AFL-CIO Carpenter’s union. He served with the U.S. Army National Guard and the U.S. Army during World War II.

Visitation will be at 8 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi. Casual attire requested.

He is survived by his wife, Marcelita Hernaez of Hawi; sons, Herman (Melinda) Hernaez of Wahiawa, Oahu, and Winston (Nida) Hernaez of Bellingham, Wash.; daughters, Melita (Wesley) Yasuda of Kaneohe, Oahu, Grace (Walter) Pilor of Hawi, Lourdes Hernaez of Kailua-Kona; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dick Larsen

Dick Floyd Larsen, 73, of Ocean View and also of Fairbanks, Alaska, died Dec. 1, 2016, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Nov. 17, 1943, in Great Falls, Mont., he was a retired engineer for Alaska Department of Transportation.

He is survived by nephews, Keith (Angie) Ackerman, Mark (Julie) Ackerman, Gary (Krly) Ackerman, Geoff (Karisse) Ackerman all of Fairbanks, Alaska, Ken (Liz) Ackerman of Boston; nieces, April Moore of Washington, Jennifer (Tom) Maiden of Pennsylvania; hanai brother, Bob Hammond of Alaska; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.

Denise Lehua Winona Scott, 40, of Ocean View and also of Winchester, Calif., died Oct. 26, 2016, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Feb. 17, 1976, in Hilo, she was a hairstylist and certified cosmetologist.

She is survived by husband, Kevin Scott, Jr.; daughter, Daisha (Cory Turinsky) Garcia, all of Winchester, Calif.; sons, Isaiah Scott, Elijah Scott; mother, Michelle Jamison, all of Las Vegas; sisters, Alicia Garcia of Sacramento, Calif., Krystal Johnson of Merced, Calif.; brothers, Anthony Johnson of Killen, Texas, Ikaika Kakazu of Landcaster, Calif.; two granddaughters, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
