VFW schedule announced

VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, welcomes all veterans and Veteran Service Organizations.

The Colin Johns Blues Band will play from 6-8 p.m. today. Doors open at 4 p.m. with a spending minimum of $10 per person.

Chicken, rice, salad and dessert will be served from 5-7 p.m. or until it’s gone Friday. Cost is $5.

The Post Auxiliary meeting is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Post.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets Saturday

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Stones Church at Pine Trees Plaza, 73-4040 Hulikoa Drive in Kailua-Kona next to Matsuyama Market.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Kiwanis Club offers scholarship to Kealakehe High School senior

The Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona has established a $1,000 scholarship to an eligible Kealakehe High School senior. Applicants must be graduating seniors at Kealakehe High School with a 2.5 minimum GPA and they must be members of good standing in the Kealakehe Key Club.

Applications are available in the office of Candy Davis, Kealakehe High School counselor. The applications must be received by March 1 at the address listed on the form. Questions may be directed to Sandra Yeates, Key Club advisor, (208) 739-1606.

Geocaching gathering planned

The ninth annual Winter Geocaching Meet and Greet event is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Kona Coast Shopping Center food court.

After the session, participants are invited to have lunch at 1 p.m. at the Harbor House at Honokohau Harbor, and perhaps do some caching.

All are welcome to this free event; no previous experience is necessary. There will be help available for anyone who owns a GPS device and needs help.

Wheaton College names Kona student to dean’s list

Wheaton College student Jozua van Bakel of Kailua-Kona, was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester.

To earn dean’s list honors at Wheaton, an undergraduate student must carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on the 4.0 scale.

HPM offers $1,000 college scholarships

Applications for the Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship are available for Hawaii Island, Oahu and Kauai high school seniors who are planning on attending any University of Hawaii institution.

The $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who are able to show a history of strong community service and a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applications are being accepted online via the University of Hawaii Common Scholarship Application. Deadline to apply is March 1.

For over 30 years the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship has promoted academic achievement and excellence to high school students. Fujimoto, a past officer of HPM, strongly valued the importance of higher education. Today, HPM continues to express these same values through this scholarship.
