Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant from Jan. 9 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than age 21.

During the week, Kona officers arrested 15 motorists while Puna and South Hilo officers arrested eight in each district. Two motorists were arrested by South Kohala officers.

So far this year, there have been 58 DUI arrests compared with 45 during the same period last year. There have been 56 major accidents, including two fatal crashes that resulted in two fatalities.
