Camp Tarawa Detachment holds work party, lunch meeting

The Camp Tarawa Detachment No. 1255 of the Marine Corps League will have a work party at the Camp Tarawa Memorial on Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea. The group will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday to clean up the area, wash the granite panels and polish the brass plaque. Wear work clothes and bring gloves. Gardening tools and cleaning materials will be provided.

The group will then meet for a no-host lunch and business meeting at 12:30 p.m. at Pueo’s Osteria in Waikoloa Village. All Marines and Navy Corpsmen serving, retired or reserve and their spouses are invited.

Free child car seat check Saturday

A certified child passenger technician will be available to check child safety restrains from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kealakekua Ranch Center below ChoiceMart.

The free event is organized by Kona Community Hospital and Hawaii State Department of Health.

According to the presenters, nearly 73 percent of child restraints are not installed or used correctly. Child passenger restraints can reduce death by as much as 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Three out of four kids are unsafe in the car.

Springfest Saturday at Kealakehe High School

The Pookela LaiOpua Springfest is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at Kealakehe High School.

A fun run open to all ages begins at 8 a.m. The event also includes entertainment, food booths, arts and crafts, workshops, makahiki demonstrations and activities.

The event is organized by Stanford University School of Medicine and Peahi Educational Group in collaboration with County of Hawaii, West Hawaii district schools, Blue Zones, Kaiser Permanente, West Hawaii Health Center, LaiOpua 2020, Kaiser, Alii Healthcare Center, PATH and West Hawaii Community College.

Little fire ant talk planned

A little fire ant awareness meeting will be presented by the Hawaii Ant Lab at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

A Hawaii Ant Lab representative will discuss ant biology and methods for control, followed by a question and answer session.

Kealakehe High School in regional science competition

Kealakehe High School will compete in the national finals of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science’s National Science Bowl Saturday at Honolulu Community College.

The winner of the regional competition will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Office of Science’s National Science Bowl from April 27 to May 1.

The National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics, energy, and math.

Kona students graduate from Azusa Pacific University

Andrew Dong, Eric Dong and Beau Hesketh, all of Kailua-Kona, graduated from Azusa Pacific University, along with approximately 1,202 graduates at the winter commencement ceremonies on Dec. 17.
