Police arrest 32 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 32 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Jan. 16 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 90 DUI arrests compared with 63 during the same period last year, an increase of 42.9 percent.

Officers in the Kona District made more than half of those arrests with 19. South Hilo officers arrested six, Puna officers three and South Kohala officers two. Police in Hamakua and Ka’u arrested one driver in each district.

There have been 80 major crashes so far this year compared with 92 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent.

So far this year, there have been three fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in three fatalities, compared with no fatal crashes during the same period last year.
