Joan Kaaua

Joan Cooper Kaaua, 83 of Hilo died Nov. 6, 2016, at home. Born Feb. 22, 1933, in Portland, Ore. she was a retired alumni coordinator at Punahou School, and also served as merchandise director and historian for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 1 at Hilo Bay near the Keaukaha canoe halau.

She is survived by daughter, Makanani (Kevin Hall) Kaaua; sons, Drea Kaaua of Maui, Alika Kaaua of Hilo; one grandson; many nieces and nephews.

Akiwo Dumakilewe

Akiwo S. Dumakilewe, 73, of Hilo died Nov. 6, 2016, at his residence. Born Nov. 17, 1942, in Pohnpei, he retired as a seafood handler for Suisan Co.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 2 at Ballard Family Mortuary-Hilo with an 11 a.m. service. Scattering of his cremated remains will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 3 at Bay Front followed by celebration of life at Reed’s Bay.

He is survived by hanai son, Brian (Saioleen) Duiai of Pohnpei; hanai daughter, Desihna (Abiut) John of Oregon; sister, Sita (Carlos) Gonzales of Hilo; hanai sisters, Serenia Kaipas, Simer (Stiwan) Duiai, all of Pohnpei; four grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carrie Mizuguchi-Higaki

Carrie Sawako Mizuguchi-Higaki, 83, of Hilo died Nov. 15, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired administrator.

Friends may call from 10–11 a.m. Dec. 2 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. celebration of her life. Casual attire. Family requests no flowers and no monetary gifts.

She is survived by sons, Galen (Michelle) Mizuguchi, Regan (Christine) Mizuguchi, Russell (Gizelle) Mizuguchi, Darryl (Janelle) Mizuguchi, all of Hilo; hanai sons, Gary Pacheco, Russell Pacheco, Michael Sakamoto, all of Hilo; sister, Janet Choy of Honolulu; 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Roger Yamauchi

Roger H. Yamauchi died Nov. 17, 2016, in Honolulu. Born in Pasco, Wash., he was a painter.

He will be interned at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Punchbowl, Oahu.

He is survived by wife, Nem Lau of Holualoa; son, Simon Lau-Yamauchi of Campbell, Calif.; siblings, Linda Reiko Adkinson, Susan Yamauchi, Bruce Yamauchi; numerous cousins.

Agnes Sunabe

Agnes Chieko Sunabe, 87, of Kaneohe, Oahu died Nov. 19, 2016 at Pohai Nani Care Center. Born in Hawi, she was a homemaker.

Private services were held.

She is survived by daughter, June Kaetsu (Melvin), Patti Kodama (Howard), Eva Miura (Steven), Lisa Min (John); son, Russell Sunabe; brothers, Kenji Toyama, Toshio “Trigger” Toyama, Warren Toyama, Dennis Toyama.
