Hawaii Lion Dance Association performs today

In celebration of the Chinese New Year and of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s 80th anniversary, as well as the 12th anniversary of its Kaloko facility, the Hawaii Lion Dance Association from Honolulu, under the direction of Senior Instructors Kelfred Chang and Elaine Jay, will perform today.

The presentation is from 2-3 p.m. at the credit union’s Kaloko facility, 73-5611 Olowalu St., Kailua-Kona.

Milone makes college dean’s list

Nicholas Milone of Kailua-Kona has been named to the University of Delaware’s dean’s list for the fall semester.

To meet eligibility requirements for the dean’s list, a student must be enrolled full-time and earn a GPA of 3.33 or above on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

Anti sex trafficking sign waiving planned

A sign waving will be held to bring awareness of the growing problem of sex trafficking on Hawaii Island. It is scheduled at 4:45 p.m. Monday along Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Henry Street.

Kona Historical Society gets $28k grant

Kona Historical Society has been awarded a $28,000 grant from Hawaii Tourism Authority to support its Hands On History program at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook.

Kona Historical Society, a nonprofit and Smithsonian Museum affiliate, will use the funds to support interpretive talks and hands-on living history demonstrations, each featuring one of 10 activities. The activities are roasting coffee using traditional home methods, lauhala weaving, Japanese calligraphy, traditional medicinal gardening, sustainable vegetable gardening, Japanese pickling, mochi making, tofu making, Sashiko crafts and Japanese floral arrangement. Hands On History will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at the farm.

The farm is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at 82-6199 Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook, near mile marker 110.

Time to apply for HFS Federal Credit Union scholarships

HFS Federal Credit Union is offering eight scholarships in a total amount of $15,500 for Big Island high school seniors. There are three $1,000 scholarships and five $2,500 scholarships available. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on a variety of criteria including their academic performance, achievements, community service and financial need.

Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher who will be pursuing their education at an accredited 2- or 4-year vocational-technical school, college or university full-time in the 2017-18 academic year are encouraged to apply.

For eligibility requirements and to download an application visit hfsfcu.org, visit an HFS FCU office, or inquire with a high school counselor. Applications must be postmarked or dropped off at a HFS FCU office by March 31.
