Hazel Langsi

Hazel (Paiva) Langsi, 87, of Hilo died Jan. 18, 2017, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hakalau, she was a retired caregiver and member of Living Waters Assembly of God.

Private services were held.

She is survived by sons, Albert (Sharon) Langsi Jr. of Honaunau, Leabert (Donna) Langsi of Keaau; hanai son, Eric (Ann) Ishihara of Hilo; sisters, Genevieve Nishi and Eleanor Segobia of Hilo; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James Copeland Jr.

James Bruce Copeland, Jr., 53, of Pepeekeo died Jan. 11, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born March 10, 1963, in Honolulu, he was a member of the First Assembly of God in Pepeekeo.

He is survived by brothers, Gerald Copeland of Pepeekeo, Guy Copeland of Honolulu; sister, Kelly Copeland of Honolulu; uncles and aunts; nieces and nephews.

Robert Wales

Robert “Bob” Bruce Wales, 76, of South Kohala died Jan. 17, 2017, at his residence. Born Aug. 24, 1940, in Chicago, he was the owner of Wales Land Co. and a retired attorney.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army of Hawaii or a charity of choice.

He is survived by wife, Barbara Wales of South Kohala; daughter, Cecy (Martin Cuevas) Wales of Japan; son, Robert (Paula) Wales; two granddaughters.

Edna Owen

Edna Ethel Barrett Owen, 100, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 11, 2017, at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born March 14, 1916, in Detroit, she was a homemaker.

Private services will be held in Kona. Interment of ashes will be at Roscrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

She is survived by son, Thomas (Virginia) Barrett of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Dolores Forster of San Diego, and Judi (Ron) Attig of El Cajon, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren.

Seth Umiamaka

Seth Noah Umiamaka, 66, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 29, 2017, at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born Aug. 5, 1950, in Honolulu, he was a security guard for Jan-Guard Hawaii Security.

Private services will be held.

He is survived by his son, Jude Umiamaka of Las Vegas; hanai son, Jason Umiamaka of Mountain View; daughters, Wailani Umiamaka of Waimea, Leialoha Umiamaka of Hookena, Hoku Umiamaka of Kailua-Kona, and Lehualani Umiamaka of the Big Island; mother, Mary Umiamaka, and brother, Ted Umiamaka both of Oahu; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Norman Purves

Norman George Purves, 63, of Hilo died Jan. 18, 2017, at home. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was a recently retired instructor of physics and astronomy at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, former tutor and former telescope operator at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.

He is survived by wife, Maren Hauschildt-Purves of Hilo, daughter, Caterina Purves of Irvine, Calif., sisters, Ruth Miller of Portland, Ore., Mary Thornton of Vancouver, Wash., Janet (Larry) Rich of Portland, Ore.; two nieces and 14 nephews.
