Annual Feed-a-Thon food drive is on

Kahikina Ching, the founder and organizer of the 16th annual Food Basket Feed-A-Thon, has scheduled 10 days this month where residents and visitors may help families in need. Supported each year by Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, this food drive will be held at HCFCU branches from Honokaa to Kealakekua and at several KTA Superstores.

Food and monetary donations will be accepted at all HCFCU branches Wednesday through Feb. 17. HCFCU staff will also sell ribbons with all contributions going directly to the Food Basket. Info: marketing@hicommfcu.com, 930-7700.

Ching will spend time at several KTA Superstores thanking people for their donations. Food and monetary donations are equally welcome because money donated is used to purchase food from KTA at wholesale prices.

Ching will be at the Kailua-Kona KTA Wednesday and Thursday, at Waikoloa Village Market Friday and Saturday, at the KTA in Waimea Center Feb. 12, 13 and KTA Keauhou Feb. 16, 17.

Kailua-Kona Seniors meet

A speaker from the Legal Aid Society will inform the Kailua-Kona Seniors on available services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. A question and answer time will follow.

Members will also make Valentines for residents of the Life Care Center. Materials will be provided. February birthdays will be celebrated.

Family Math Night Thursday

Kealakehe Elementary’s third annual Family Math Night will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, for the Kealakehe Elementary School ohana.

Families will have the opportunity to engage in several different math activities and games. Computer technicians will be available to help families access and use math websites. Dinner and door prizes will follow.

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets

Kona Traffic Safety Committee will meet from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday to discuss traffic issues with public officials who can make a difference. Everyone is welcome.

The committee meets the second Thursday of each month in the Mayors Conference Room of the West Hawaii Community Center on Kealakakehe Parkway on the second floor of Building C above the license bureau.

Coffee berry borer workshop coming up

University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will hold a workshop about the coffee berry borer.

CTAHR’s Coffee and Orchard Crops Extension Agent Andrea Kawabata, will provide growers updates on CBB research and integrated pest management. As available, Beauveria subsidy program coordinators from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Synergistic Hawaii Agriculture Council will be on hand to talk about programs to assist coffee producers with the cost of commercial Beauveria products.

Low vision support group meets

The West Hawaii Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind meets at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hale Halawai.

The low vision support group meets monthly to share information and resources available for the vision impaired. Election of officers for the 2017 year will be conducted. Those with vision difficulties are encouraged to come, share and learn how to deal with daily challenges.

FOLK book sale coming up

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Library. Proceeds help support the needs of the Kona libraries.

Teachers will receive discounts with their school ID. Volunteers are welcome and book donations are accepted at the library. Additional volunteers are sought to help close down the sale in the afternoon. To voluntter, call 322-0077.

KTA donates more than $3,000 to Hospice of Kona

Hospice of Kona received more than $2,000 from KTA Super Stores for its family support outreach services. KTA’s Register Tag program which raised funds when shoppers purchased the tags, which added the donation to their shopping bill.

Additionally, KTA donated $1,000 to Hospice of Kona which, in turn, used that donation to purchases $1,000 in gift cards to KTA. The gift cards are then distributed to families in need under Hospice’s care.
