Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona meets

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, 325-6625. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The speaker will be Leahne Toscano, administrator for West Hawaii Child Welfare.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Independent grand jury counsels sought

The Circuit Court of the Third Circuit is seeking applications for independent grand jury counsels. The compensation shall be as provided by law.

Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the state of Hawaii establishes that whenever a grand jury is impaneled, an independent counsel shall be appointed as provided by law, to advise the members of the grand jury regarding matters brought before it.

Individuals must be licensed to practice law in Hawaii who are not public employees.

Those interested in being considered for a one-year appointment to either Hilo or Kona should submit a letter indicating interest and a resume by April 15 to Chief Judge Ronald Ibarra, Keakealani Building, 79-1020 Haukapila St., Kealakekua, HI 96750

Taniguchi appointed chairman of Hawaii Employers Council Board

Toby Taniguchi, president and chief operating officer of KTA Super Stores was recently appointed chairman of the Hawaii Employers Council Board of Governors for 2017. Taniguchi brings over 21 years of entrepreneurial and leadership experience, and is active in public service and nonprofit organizations throughout the community. He has served on the Hawaii Employers Council Board since 2012, and on its Executive Committee since 2014.

The following executives were also elected to serve three-year terms on the board: Joe Bradley, editor and publisher of The Maui News; Kurt Fey, executive director, Y. Hata &Co. Limited; Jan Harada, president and chief executive officer, Helping Hands Hawaii; Janna Nakagawa, senior vice president, Governance and Corporate Services, HMSA; Paul Naso, general counsel, Hawaii Employees’ Mutual Insurance Co.; Michael Nolan, executive vice president of finance, Servco Pacific; Bruce Rosen, executive vice president, Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union; Paul Saito, partner, Cades Schutte; Joyce Tamori, chief financial officer, Hale Makua Health Services; Michael Yamane, chief of operations, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative; Glenn Yamashita, vice president of finance, Honolulu Cookie Co.

The Hawaii Employers Council is a nonprofit employer association dedicated to helping companies of all sizes build and maintain collaborative employee relations that result in skilled, engaged and effective workforces.

Hawaii Water Service supports area nonprofits

Hawaii Water Service Co. donated a total of $15,500 to local charitable organizations in 2016, ranging from food banks to environmental organizations, to educational foundations and women’s services.

Hawaii Water selected several local charities to support, including the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii, Women Helping Women, Maui Food Bank, Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative and Friends of the Library—Waikoloa Region. Hawaii Water also offered support through monetary contributions, event sponsorship and participation in community events such as the Parker School Fairways and Friends Golf Tournament, Waikoloa Village Association Fun Fest, and the Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference. All funds were donated by the company’s stockholders as part of the company’s philanthropic giving program and not paid for by ratepayers.
