Event supports local conservation efforts

A “Sealed with a Kiss” event with live music, pupu and a silent auction will support The Marine Mammal Center’s Ke Kai Ola monk seal hospital and The Kohala Center.

The event is from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 12 at Ke Kai Ola, 73-731 Makako Bay Drive. Admission is free. The silent auction will include dive packages, whale watching and area wildlife photographers.

The Marine Mammal Center’s mission is to advance global ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research and education. Kohala Center is an independent, community-based center for research, conservation, and education.

Dances of universal peace planned

Dances of universal peace are planned from 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday at New Thought Center in Kealakekua.

Attendees will move in the moment while singing sacred phrases and poetry of many spiritual traditions. The meaning and the movements of each dance are taught then the group moves in unity.

VA town hall meeting today

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced a VA town hall meeting at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel from 4:30-6 p.m. today.

The purpose of the town hall, one of several scheduled across the country, is to create a dialogue between VA officials and the veterans they serve, along with veterans’ families and concerned members of the public.

The meeting will help determine how VA service providers can improve operations.

The event is co-hosted by the Honolulu Regional Office, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and VA Pacific Island Healthcare System.

State Ethics and Campaign Spending Commissions seeks applicants

The Judicial Counsel has extended the deadline to apply for vacancies on the Hawaii State Ethics Commission and the Campaign Spending Commission. The new application deadline is March 4.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, residents of Hawaii, and may not hold any other public office.

Applicants from all islands may apply. Travel expenses incurred by neighbor island members to attend meetings on Oahu will be reimbursed.

Interested persons should submit an application, a resume, and three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s character and integrity to: Judicial Council, Hawaii Supreme Court, 417 S. King St., Second Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813-2902.

An application form is available on the Judiciary website or can be obtained by calling the Judicial Council at 539-4702.

American Association of University Women offers scholarships

The American Association of University Women Kona Branch will award scholarships of $2,000 this spring to exceptional female high school seniors with financial need in West Hawaii who will be attending a two- or four-year college or university.

The criteria for choosing scholarship recipients are academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular high school activities, community organizations, and/or employment experience, educational and career goals and financial need. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, and are available from high school counselors or at kona-hi.aauw.net.

Home-schooled are welcome to apply. These scholarships are unique in that the funds may be used for anything that enables the student to achieve her academic goals.
