Beekeeping talk planned at Kealakekua library

Kealakekua Public Library will host a presentation by Ed Fenzl, certified master gardener, on beekeeping and building natural beehives. It is from 5:15-6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He will discuss the importance of bees in their interrelationship with nature and demonstrate three natural hives constructed with recycled wood. Resource information will be available for those who wish to purchase kits and plans for building hives.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, this program is free.

Kailua-Kona Seniors plan trip to tsunami museum

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai for a trip to Hilo. The seniors will travel to the tsunami museum for a tour and to spend time in Hilo. This is a pre-planned, pre-paid event. Attendees should bring correct payment for transportation.

There is no meeting at Hale Halawai this week.

Free homeownership seminar planned

To help prospective buyers become happy homeowners, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is hosting “ABC’s of Home Ownership,” a free seminar that will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the credit union’s Kaloko Facility. The seminar is free but seating is limited.

Presented by Reina Miyamoto, program director of the Hawaii HomeOwnership Center, attendees will learn about homeownership requirements and potential obstacles to purchasing a home, such as having too much debt, not having enough money for a down payment and not knowing where to find accurate and reliable information.

The Hawaii HomeOwnership Center, a nonprofit organization, provides information and services needed to become a homeowner, including homebuyer education and one-on-one coaching.

Keiki story time planned

With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories bookstore will host a story time best suited for children ages 3-7 years old. The event is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the courtyard of the Keauhou Shopping center.

The keiki storytime features books, crafts and snacks about the barnyard. Featured books will be “Barnyard Dance,” “Old MacDonald had a Farm” and “Maisy’s Morning on the Farm.”

There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snacks. Space is limited to 24 children and reservations are required. Check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories Book Store.

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona meets

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, Kailua-Kona, 325-6625.

All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The speaker will be Lisa Chu-Thielbar, past board president of Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Trail closure at Kaloko-Honokohau

The Hale Hookipa Visitor Center and the Ala Mauka Makai Trail leading from the visitor center to Honokohau Beach at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park will be closed from 6-10 a.m. Wednesday during the removal of invasive, non-native vegetation as the park will be using helicopter operations.
