Kaloko Fishpond workday Sunday

The community is invited to join Hui Kaloko-Honokohau in its monthly Kaloko Fishpond workday from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The day will begin with chants, prayers and offerings at 8 a.m. Then the group will focus on removing invasive species from the fishpond and finish with a potluck. Attendees should wear a hat and loose long sleeve clothing.

Kailua-Kona library celebrates 25th anniversary

The Kailua-Kona Public Library will celebrate its 25th anniversary from Feb. 22 through March 2. Everyone is invited to join in the celebration at 75-138 Hualalai Road.

The library will highlight these Hawaii State Public Library System digital resources at 2 p.m. on the following days. Staff will conduct demonstrations, bring your devices to learn and follow along:

· Wednesday – OverDrive Day – eBook, Audiobook

· Thursday – Zinio Day – eMagazine

· Friday – Mango Languages Day – Learn a foreign language

· Feb. 28 – OneClick Digital Day – Audiobook

· March 1 – New HSPLS Website Day

· March 2 – HSPLS App Day

The library’s 25th anniversary will be celebrated with a slack key guitar performance by Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner John Keawe at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The library opened in 1972 and moved into its current home on Feb. 29, 1992. It is the second largest and second busiest library on the Big Island.

Kona Historical Society recognized on 40th anniversary

The State of Hawaii House of Representatives recently honored Kona Historical Society for its outstanding work and commitment to the preservation of Hawaii’s history and passion for sharing Kona’s culture with all of Hawaii’s people.

Reps. Nicole Lowen, Cindy Evans, Richard Creagan, Clift Tsuji, Richard Onishi, Joy San Buenaventura and Mark Nakashima, along with Speaker of the House Joseph Souki and Chief Clerk Brian Takeshita, presented the certificate which congratulated the nonprofit on its 40th anniversary.

Kona Historical Society is a community-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has spent the past four decades collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the Kona districts and their rich cultural heritage within Hawaii. Its accomplishments include:

• Being the first Smithsonian affiliated museum in the state

• Being the only museum in Hawaii with two permanent National Endowment for the Humanities Exhibits

• Having the only living history site in Hawaii

• Having the only regular academic and historical lecture series in West Hawaii
